This year we tried a new format by only having one heat in each of the regions with the top scorers from each going forward to the finals that were held at the Birnam Institute, Dunkeld. We feel this made for a more exciting atmosphere on the day and I’m sure those present will agree it proved to be a huge success.
Kirkhill Primary were in first place after a first round win of 4-0 & managed to maintain their lead throughout to win the Primary section, Taking the annual shield, individual trophies & a voucher for £150 to spend
with Chess Suppliers for equipment for their school. As Kirkhill are already well equipped with chess sets & clocks the team decided to spend their winnings on a selection of junior chess books & training DVD's for the school chess club to have a lending library.
In the P5 & under section the winning place was undecided until the last round where Smithfield Primary, Aberdeen took the title along with their
shield, trophies & £150 voucher.
Showing real strength in depth Sciennes Primary School, Edinburgh came second in both sections & along with their trophies took £50 vouchers for each of the 2nd places.
Cash prizes, donated by some generous benefactors on the day (you know who you are), were awarded to the highest scorers in both sections. Stuart Wynne of Burnside Primary scored 7/7 in the P5 & under & Sean Scott-Lodge scored 7/7 in the Primary section.
Special prizes were awarded for best game to Connor MacKinnon of Busby Primary & Ross Mullen of Kirkhill Primary for their fantastic clock control in a nail biting ending which finished as a draw.
